How to Decorate Your Iron Entry Door for the Holidays

Learn how to properly hang a wreath on your iron front door and explore other porch decoration ideas for various holidays.

With the holidays approaching, it’s a great time to add some decorations to your front door and the space that surrounds it. Wreaths and garlands are a fun way to dress up your entryway as well as greenery, pumpkins, and flowers. Explore decoration ideas and two methods to hang a wreath on your door.

2 Ways to Hang a Wreath on an Iron Door

1. Tie a Zip Tie around the Simulated Divided-Light Bar

If you have a simulated divided-light (SDL) door, you may be able to hang a wreath using a zip tie or fishing line. An SDL door has one piece of glass that appears to be divided into multiple panels because the iron bars on the door form a grid. It mimics the look of a true divided-light (TDL) door, which features multiple smaller pieces of glass that are sealed between the door’s iron bars. If you have a simulated divided-light door, there will typically be a slight gap between the glass and the iron bar grid (muntin). You can feed the zip tie into this gap and loop the zip tie around a wreath so it can hang on the door.

2. Request a Permanent Hook on your Custom Iron Door

When working with one of Clark Hall’s Sales Associates to design your door, mention that you are interested in a permanent hook. We will weld an iron hook onto the grid of your door. This creates a simple way to hang wreaths and other decorations. The downside of this option is that there will be a visible hook on your door at times when a wreath is not hanging.

Other Ways to Decorate Your Home Entryway

Garland

Draping garland around a door or archway is a popular trend in December. Some homeowners even enhance it with string lights or bows. There are various methods for securing garland around your front door, including command cable bundlers or nails with zip ties.

Porch Decor

Another way to dress up your home entry is with porch fixtures. Holiday-themed statues and signs are popular, especially around Easter and Christmas. In the fall, pumpkins and gourds can give your porch a festive feel. Potted flowers are a classic option for the spring and summer time. If you are looking for a simple option to reuse year after year, try switching out various welcome mats to match the season or holiday.
