Definition of Door Jamb
A door jamb frames the door and is necessary for holding up its weight and keeping it in place. The door and door hinges attach to the jamb. The jamb attaches to wooden boards in the wall framing known as studs.
Clark Hall has a standard 3-sided jamb, as opposed to competitor’s 4-sided jamb. A 3-sided jamb allows for an adjustable threshold, less risk of damaging the door during transit, and an easy installation.
Door Jamb vs Door Frame
‘Door jamb’ and ‘door frame’ can be used interchangeably in the context of iron or steel doors. They are both referring to the lining that the door hangs on. However, door framing (or rough opening) is a separate term and refers to the structural skeleton inside of the wall where a hole is placed to create the doorway. The door jamb is fitted into this opening.
What is a Jamb Adjustment?
A jamb adjustment is the process of repositioning a door jamb. It is required when a door is not properly latching or is sticking when you open it. An iron jamb adjustment typically takes about an hour, but it depends on the complexity of the issue.
How to Install an Iron Door Jamb
- Place the jamb into the wall framing.
- Using a level, ensure that the jamb is level and plumb. Level means that the left and right sides of the door are the same height. Plumb means the jamb is not leaning forward or backward. If needed, use shims to raise the right or left side to make it even.
- Secure the jamb to the framing using lag screws, also known as lag bolts.
Typical Iron Door Jamb Sizes
For 2×4 framing, a typical jamb size is 4 ½” and for 2×6 framing it is 6 ½”.
